Recently, a performance video of a P-Pop girl group was making the rounds on Twitter. While not surprised by how incredible they sounded, if you have been to karaoke with any of your Filipino friends, you will understand; it made us realise that we are very new to the world of P-Pop.

So, after some recommendations from the comments section, here is the beginner’s introduction we made for ourselves.

BINI

Probably one of the most popular P-Pop Girl groups as of late, BINI provide everything you want from a girl pop group. Warm and vibrant vocals, catchy beats and hypnotising choreography. This absolutely stunning 8-member act states they are a “group of young, modern Filipinas who aspire to share their talent and passion with the world” and we are happy that they are here to do so. Their latest single is ‘Step Back’, with the performance video having amassed over 1M views in just 3 weeks- so needless to say they have the HYPE they deserve.

SB19

According to our research, SB19 have been dubbed the Kings of P-Pop, and it’s easy to see why. With a real original sound and self-managed, they really are paving their own path in the pop scene. While originally they had some South Korean management ties, they seem to really have established themselves as a proudly Pinoy force. Basically take K-Pop training with Filipino sound and soul, and you get SB19.

G22

There is so much soul to G22‘s music. This trio has been named the “female alphas” of the P-Pop world, and their music backs up this claim. Almost a Latina-rnb/pop feel in some instances, like their latest single ‘Groove On’ and mature elements in others, like ‘Pa-Pa-Pa-Palaban’, they really feel like a group of grown women- which is a breath of fresh air in the pop industry. They have some real club bangers (and are very likely going to be on regular rotation in the FGC office).

ALAMAT

This might be one of the most intriguing groups on this list. ALAMAT, which translates to ‘legend’ in English, refers not just to the idea of grandeur but moreso the act of passing down myths and legends. All the members are from various regions of the Philippines and instead of being made to conform to a uniform hybrid of English and Tagalog, they all sing in the languages from their respective regions. They also blend indigenous instruments with a more modern sound palette, which is part of the reason they have such a rich and diverse sound to their music. Pinoy pop in its truest essence, label us obsessed because ALAMAT have us looking to stan.

Mei Mei

One of the newest acts on this list, Mei Mei are an 8-member group that is about fun and freshness. With a cutesy style that taps into that real retro pop feel, it is extremely hard to resist their charms! Very easy listening with extremely vibrant visuals, it’s going to be very interesting to see where their career takes them.

BGYO

Standing for Becoming the change, Going further, You and I, Originally Filipino, BYGO have captured hearts. Inspired by K-Pop but still determined to keep their identity as a group completely Filipino, their dance pop, sometimes Latin-infused and often R&B leaning songs continuously keep them at the forefront of the mind for the pop-loving generation…and not just amongst Filipinos. We can’t lie, we are swooning a little.

RAYA

This 9-member girl group is built around inspiring people to fulfil their dreams and aspirations. Debuting last year, they have been a fast-rising act and for good reason. Their songs dip between classic dance pop, OPM and a lean to hiphop in some instances. Contrasting between cutesy and powerful stylings, their feminine strength is at the root of their charm. The group actually just dropped a new visualiser as we were writing this, so we are looking forward to hearing their new music.

Vxon

Dubbed the “Monsters of P-Pop”, debuting with the powerful track ‘The Beast ‘, but over the last 4 years, they have shown their versatility. Strong dancing, great voices and a real charisma about them; their nickname is well earned. Award winning and a very passionate fanbase, Vxon seems like they will have a long future in the P-Pop industry.

As we mentioned at the start, this is by no means a comprehensive guide- this is just our findings from our first forray into P-Pop.
